Why Huntington isn't Making News  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Friday, November 30 2007 @ 12:07 AM CST
By Richard A. Mathews

The Pirate Nation is realistically pondering "Why Huntington isn't making news moving vetern players for the type of Impact prospects the Bucs desperately need."

One obvious reason is "Fan Perception".

Ownership is concerned any perception by ticket buying customers Huntington is selling off fan appreciated players for prospects to dump salary will result in substantially lower ticket sales.

The other reason can be seen in reviewing the following OnlyBucs.net reprint which appeared on March 3, 2003.

If this naive baseball fan could identify four years ago five Pirate farm hands who had big league potential, Huntington and his staff have some very difficult roster assessments to make on who to move and who might just be worth one more serious look.

Enjoy the article.

“John Russell, Two Stories worth Telling”

By Richard A. Mathews

Okay, John Russell isn’t Tony Pena or Phil Garner or Art Howe or Ken Macha.

He hasn’t ever managed a big league club. He hasn’t ever led a major league team into the playoffs. He doesn’t have the Pittsburgh connection of any of the above.

But let me tell you a couple true tales about Mr. Russell which you probably will never hear anywhere else.

Frank Coonelly and Neal Huntington are facing a standard dilemma for a moribund baseball franchise: Do you blow it up and rebuild, or do you try to cobble together a winning team against heavy odds? Looming over all of it is the record losing streak, which Coonelly has said he wants no part of.

The Freddie Phenomena

By Richard A. Mathews

Following Mr Freddie’s Sanchez Thursday night performance against the Reds which included an opposite field rocket which crashed the right field wall adding one more double to his amazing August total, the Bucs second baseman owns a monthly OPS of 1.092!

To fully appreciate the Freddie Phenomenon been read on.

(Part Two)

Dave Littlefield has spent much of his tenure as GM of the Pirates evading the consequences of failure. For somebody who’s produced nothing but failure in over six years, he’s been surprisingly successful at it. It’s really only in the past year or so that the last vestiges of support for Littlefield have dried up among the more dedicated fans. For a long time, Littlefield was able to blame everything on Cam Bonifay. When that excuse got old, the spin shifted to, "We're young and improving." At long last, we’re reaching the fruition of Littlefield’s radical, never-been-tried-before plan of building through the farm system. He must be doing a good job, we're supposed to think, because players are graduating to the majors.

(Part One of Two)

Here we go again.

The Pirates’ season is taking on a familiar look. Like every other season under Dave Littlefield’s maladministration, this one ended in June. The epitaph is the same every year: “When do the Steelers open camp?” Apathy and disinterest set in among the fans. And like most other years under Littlefield, one other thing happens once the season becomes pointless: Then, and only then, do the Pirates start to look something like a major league team.

Bucs Battle Giants, A Pitchers’ Duel?

By Richard A. Mathews

As the Pirates prepare to play 5 games over 4 days versus the Barry Bonds led Giants, it is ironic the outcome of those contests will largely be determined by how either club’s offense handles the efforts of the following starting pitchers:

3.32 era Lowry, S.F.
3.59 era Linecum, S.F.
3.77 era Cain, S.F.
3.50 era Gorzelanny, Pgh
3.87 era Snell, Pgh
4.59 era Maholm, Pgh

“Dear Bob: Call Dr. D. Immediately”

By Richard A. Mathews

Dear Bob:

Call Dr. D. Immediately.

I am sure I speak for the majority of the Pirate Nation greatly appreciating your willingness to spend $15.7 million to acquire veteran talent.

The problem is, everyone in baseball and even we simple fans understand, Matt Morris isn't worth $15.7 million to any team in baseball especially your Pirates.

In case Dave didn’t mention Morris recent performances, the man last posted a season era under 4.00 in 2003.

Today, Matt Morris is not the same calibre pitcher he was between 2001 – 2003 when he posted era’s of 3.16, 3.42 and 3.76 respectfully fanning 185, 171 and 120 batters respectfully.

Bob, did you see a pattern in the above stats for Morris?

Well if you didn’t catch it the first time here we go again:
