ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers activated closer Eric Gagne from the disabled list Friday and placed right-handed starter Jamey Wright on the DL with shoulder inflammation.
Gagne, a right-hander signed in the offseason, made three appearances including two starts for the Rangers' Double-A Frisco RoughRiders. He was 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA and retired all three batters he faced in his last outing Tuesday.
Manager Ron Washington said this week he intends for Gagne to pitch an inning in his first game, and the move eventually puts interim Rangers closer Akinori Otsuka back into a setup role. Texas opens a three-game series at Seattle on Friday night.
Wright, who placed on the DL retroactive to Wednesday, has made one start with the Rangers, a no-decision against Tampa Bay on Tuesday. He allowed five runs on five hits, including one homer, and has a 16.88 ERA.
