The Padres and center fielder Mike Cameron have deferred talks on a contract extension until after the season. Cameron's agent, Mike Nicotera, said yesterday morning that negotiations probably won't resume until Cameron becomes eligible for free agency in November.
“We're done for now,” Nicotera said. “Negotiations won't resume during the season. We got to a point where we agreed to disagree. There was no acrimony.”
Advertisement Cameron, 34, is seeking a three-year extension. In the offseason, the Padres picked up Cameron's $7 million option for 2007, which General Manager Kevin Towers described as a bargain.
The Padres don't have an advanced center-field prospect in their farm system. One outfielder who is a favorite of Towers is Mariners center fielder Ichiro Suzuki, who is eligible for free agency in November.
Cameron, who broke out of a slump with three hits last night, said the negotiations weren't a distraction and that being in a walk year isn't of concern. “It's been the furthest thing from a distraction,” he said.
