I won't like and say that I'm all that crazy about Gardner's abilities simply because his hitting is so inconsistent, but he does steal bases, and he's turned into one of the best left fielders in the game. Some have suggested that perhaps he should have won the Gold Glove Award for outfield last season.
If Gardner ever gets to the point where he hits .280-.300, he'll steal 70-80 bases per year. Ideally, someone like him would be batting at the top of the lineup along with Jeter to get guys who are mobile on the base paths and have speed when they get on. The problem is that he doesn't have a high enough on base percentage to warrant that. Outside that, he's a gritty player, plays hard, runs the bases better than any other player on the Yankees, and is a great fielder.
