    HOT STOVE I, by togababe

Yankeemania.comWith the FA market just hours away, YANKEES' HOT STOVE with Bob Lorenz debuts for the 2008 season. Guest tonight are Tyler Kepner &
    Kevin Kernan.

Joe G on phone: On Swisher trade - probably 1st hitting 5-7th in lineup, good presence in clubhouse, plays with intensity. KLong will work with him on raising average, works count. FA- will be as active as he can to recruit FAs & trades, willing to do whataever it takes. CC is the prize. State of the art clubhouse, playing in NY, prestige of playing center stage. Others on radar-guarantee on rotation is only Wang so we will be aggressive. On Joba-6-7 solid starters needed. Joba's penciled as starter but 32 starts doubtful with limited time this season. On Cano - more aggressive last 3 weeks of season, struggled but grew this year. playiong WL in DR-value on market , if something makes sense, who knows. Kevin will head to DR working on stance allowing consistency and reducing movement of head (kevin has been in SE with ALex) - Joe has benefit at Grand Center Oyster Bar Wednesday to support Alzheimer's Foundation, (wish I was able to attend). Joe heading out to LL game with his son (football), who just hit Dad in the back of the head with the ball throwing to his little sister.

    The Season Ends, by togababe

Yankeemania.comIt's September 29, 2008, and now we face the realization that the Yankee season came to halt yesterday, there will be no more MLB baseball in New York in 2008, and the doors on the Cathedral of Baseball are closed (with the exception of cleaning out lockers, etc, soon Monument Park will be moved across the street). Though game #162 was a crap loss, the Team closed out the season in high fashion, too bad it took so long to zone in. We saw some good things during the final weeks. Derek Jeter passed Lou Gehrig for the most hits at the Stadium, never to be broken. Mike Mussina had a turnaround, career season deserving of Comeback Player of the Year for the first time winning 20 games, allowing a mere 31 walks the entire season. It's very possible he will soon announce his retirement - but that's going out on top with good memories.

We witnessed Andy Pettitte win the final game at the Cathedral, this coming off a personal 5 game losing streak. Andy didn't have a great year so questions will be addressed. There is an option of 2009, but will the bad of this year tip the scale and see Andy remain home with his family when ST rolls around. Would the Yankees be willing to extend his contract for 2009?

Congratulations Moose = #20 at 39, by togababe

Yankeemania.comA dreary, rainy day in BeanTown, the last day of our 2008 season but game 1 of a possible day/night DH saw Mike Mussina for the first time in his amazing career become a 20 game winner, #270 of his career. He needed three successive wins in 3 tries - today the baseball gods smiled on him. Six shutout innings against the Sux before Joe G turned a 3-0 game over to the bullpen with Mariano Rivera promising to pitch if needed.

Xavier Nady provided a 3-run shot that hit the top of the rail in right field and bounded into the seats-staking Moose to a lead that was not surrendered - sputtered in the 8th though. Phil Coke provided a solid 7th then Joe brought Joba in for the 8th. Strangely Joba had runners on 2nd & 3rd with no outs - Joe began managing for the W like a WS game. Bruney got two outs with 1 run scoring-Dmart brought the Sux within 1 with an rbi single to Ellsbury. With the game on the line, tying run on, strains of Enter Sandman floated through my head as Mariano trotted in whiffed Pedroia to end the threat.

    Mussina Wins 18th, by togababe

Yankeemania.comWith offense by Bobby Abreu, Mike Mussina was able to win his 18th of the season 9-2 over the Pale Hose last night. First innings hiccups saw the Yankees trailing 0-1 but Moose settled to them in check through 6. Bobby Abreu quickly gave his teammate a 2-1 lead with his 8th long ball off Vazquez. In the 3rd he provided a solo shot and when the final out was recorded, Bobby had 2 home runs and 6 rbis for a productive evening.

Johnny Damon was off following the birth of his daughter, so Nady and Gardner rounded out the outfield. As the Yankees pulled ahead later in the game, Joe G gave some call ups a taste of the 'big stage'. Humberto Sanchez pitched an inning of shutout relief as did Jose Veras. Chris Britton surrendered a long ball to Paul Konerko before getting the final three outs. Juan Miranda played his first major league game at 1st picking up 2 walks. Since being benched, Robby has shown more aggressiveness in the field, turning in some quality plays and also picking up 5 hits in his last two games-looks like the wakeup call came a little late in the season. This was the 1st 4-game series the Yankees won in 2008.

    Congratulations Mariano

Yankeemania.comIn what is turning out to be a frustrating, disappointing final season for the House that Ruth Built, Mariano Riveria has been a beacon of sunshine. He is turning in one of his best seasons ever especially in save situations-last night picking up #36 on the year which was good for sole possession of 2nd place on the all-time saves list passing Lee Smith with 479. Only Trevor Hoffman is ahead of him, imagine if there had been more save opportunities for Mariano the last two years where he might be. Also Joe Torre didn't put him in a game jusr because it was a save opportunity like other teams have done with their closers. Need I state MHO that Mariano Riveria is the greatest closer of this generation-in deference to Goose, Luis Arroyo, Ryne Duren, I won't say all time because the parimeters have changed.

Obviously the Yankees beat the White Sox 4-2 and we saw our young arms perform well.

    Jorge on CenterStage, by togababe

Yankeemania.comYankee all-star catcher Jorge Posada might be out with shoulder surgery this year but he found a way to make headlines during a taping of the YES Network's CENTERSTAGE hosted by Michael Kay. A segement called hit and run which is word association, Michael was giving Jorge teammates' names and Jorge was to give his first response. The name Joba Chamberlain - the reply relief. Not a new concept but Jorge explained that in his opinion Joba is more valuable out of the pen. He feels that if Joba were to throw 200 innings it would result in injury - though this season might not be a fair evaluation-he did well out of the pen was stretched out to a starter where he was also effective.

    Moose at 17, by togababe

Yankeemania.comWith a little fire power from Xavier Nady who rocked one of the catwalk support and Alex Rodriguez who tied Mike Schmidt with #548 and 12th spot on the All-time HR List, Mike Mussina gave another super performance at the Trop. It's been a delight to watch the consistency with which he varies speed by like 20 mph between his 86-88 FB and a 68 mph breaking pitch-kept Rays' hitters off balance for most of his 6+ solid innings of 2 runs, 2 hits, 1 walk and 8 Ks ball. Marte came in with runners on the corners allowing 1 run to score while recording 2 outs. Then the moment Yankee fans have been waiting for this past month, Joba returned; after throwing just one pitch for the final out in the 7th, threw 1 hit, 1 walk 8th in picking up his 13th hold of the season-this was a more serious Joba though there were some smiles. Hey we even saw MOOSE smile when he fooled Hinske on a breaking pitch for a FP to Molina. Dan Giese also returning from the DL wrapped up a perfect 9th.

Will We Ever Catch a Break?, by togababe

Yankeemania.comAnything that could go wrong seemed - from Andy being squeezed on early calls to some crappola fielding not to mentions failure with risp. With every game crucial, every series a must getting off to a rotten start especially against the dreaded, hated Sux does not bode well. Andy struggled from the first inning when HPU Jim Reynolds refused to give him those close calls, some looked to be right there, when it continued in the 2nd Andy began to rattle. The Yankees or rather Johnny Damon gave him the early lead which he promptly gave up-teammates came back in the bottom of the second to tie it on Molina's rbi. Come the third Andy quickly saw the snowball effect as the Sux took a lead they would not relinquish.

When Andy was replaced after 4.2, the pen held the Sux in check giving up just one run. The problem the became driving in runs. Several shots were pulled foul, a couple more we just got under. But I don't usually single out one player's screwups but perhaps frustration after game you will indulge me. I grew watching some great Yankee 3rd sackers: begin with smooth fielding Andy Carey (yeah he was the Yankee in the wheelchair at OTD) and the slick fielding Clete Boyer in the 50s and early 60's.

Handy Andy Comes Through, by togababe

Yankeemania.comAfter a tough loss Tuesday, Andy Pettitte took the mound in Toronto last night. He hasn't been the stellar go-to guy this year so you wondered which version would come through. Brighter than the hot July sun, Andy's performance with 2 innings of relief from Brian Bruney shutdown the Jays.

The veteran lefty was vintage surrendering one run on five hits while keeping the ball down for the better part of his seven complete innings. Throwing only 86 pitches there was question as to why he was removed after the 7th-but I thought it was the right decision. He was still in command but had shown some signs of tiring as his ball hung up a bit during the run-scoring sixth inning. Bri hadn't pitched since Saturday and needed the work since coming off the DL to sharpen and hone his nasty stuff. Solid D behind these guys kept the Jays off the paths-Giambi made some nice plays at 1st even saving a couple errors for Alex as his throws seemed to sail'n'tail across the rubberized surface.

    Moose Gets #16, by togababe

Yankeemania.comAfter a shaky first where he surrendered 3 runs to the Royals, Mike Mussian pitched a perfect 2-6 innings to keep his team in the game. He whiffed 5 while allowing zippo walks while his teammates came through on O and D for the earliest 16th W in his career.

In the bottom of the 1st Alex tied the game with a 3 run rocket and Xman went yard to give Moose a lead he would not give up. Jason Giambi hit a grand salami while Cody Rasmon collected his first Yankee ab, hit and home run in one trip to the plate. Johnny Damon was the only starter not to get at least one hit but worked two walks, scoring both times. Jete took his average to .295 with 4 hits.
