LOUDMOUTH

Yankeemania.comLOUDMOUTH

By CRAIG CARTON

Craig Carton embodies the mad but vital enthusiasm of what is to be a die-hard sports fan. You may know him as the guy who walked the Brooklyn Bridge in January in a speedo (after losing a bet), trailed by legions of fellow Jets fans. Often compared to Howard Stern, Carton has hosted a series of highly rated sports-talk shows—in Buffalo, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Denver, before returning to NYC where he and Boomer Esiason co-host the #1 morning show on WFAN, “Boomer and Carton.”

In LOUDMOUTH (Simon & Schuster hardcover, on sale June 4, 2013, $24.99), his debut book, Carton invites readers to join him as he recounts the days of his reckless youth, his college shenanigans at Syracuse, and the hardships of starting a radio career and winning over fans as an unknown figure in a new city. Along the way, he also adds his signature rants about some of today’s highest paid and most celebrated athletes.

THE SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS—
2012 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS

The 2012 San Francisco Giants made history.

Not just because they scraped and battled throughout an injury-plagued year. Not just because they returned to the World Series for the second time in three years. And not just because they beat the powerful Detroit Tigers to bring the world title back to the Bay Area.

No. These Giants made history because no team has ever showed the grit and determination that this team showed last year. With their backs always against the wall, they performed with a mastery of their craft that became the envy of the sports word. Superlative baseball played at the most crucial moments. They faced six elimination games in the NLDS and NLCS. The won six straight elimination games, before they swept the Tigers and Triple Crowned, AL MVP Miguel Cabrera in four games.

The Forgotten Team That Broke Baseball’s Color Line
Tom Dunkel

“Award-winning journalist Dunkel has not only researched and presented a virtually forgotten
but very significant piece of sports history, he has also done it in a very entertaining,
narrative nonfiction style. The principals, particularly Churchill and his players (including Satchel Paige)
just simply come alive. Baseball fans will cherish this book, and it will become required reading among those who feel we can better understand today’s racial tensions by looking to the past.”
—Booklist (starred review)

"A decade before Jackie Robinson broke the Major League Baseball color line in 1947,
an integrated team captured the imagination of Bismarck, North Dakota . . . Dunkel delves into
the history of players, towns, and baseball itself in constructing this portrait of a harmonious team
rising above a segregated society. . . . a story that transcends championships, and an
inspirational reflection on an otherwise dismal human rights history."

INSTANT BASEBALL

A LOOK INSIDE BASEBALL
“INSIDE THE BOX” OF INSTAGRAM

INSTANT BASEBALL
Brad Mangin is a professional baseball photographer.

With his photo pass in hand, he is free to wander and experience our national pastime in ways most of us cannot imagine.

The 2012 major league season offered him many photo opportunities and produced too many remarkable images to count; a broad-shouldered power-hitter, bat in hand; a young fielder bathed in sunshine sprinting to the field; an intimate portrait of a Cy Young-caliber knuckleballer. Classic images.

He captured all of these and more. Did he use his Canon digital SLR? No. His Canon point-and-shoot camera? Nope. He was shooting with his new favorite camera: his Apple iPhone 4S. His app of choice? Instagram.

Within the square format of Instagram, Mangin fell in love and felt like he was seeing the game with a fresh set of eyes. After paging through his beautiful new collection of images—“INSTANT BASEBALL: The Baseball Instagrams of Brad Mangin”, Foreword by Pedro Gomez (Cameron + Company, April 9, 2013)—readers will feel the same way. This the 2012 major league season—from spring training all the way to the World Series parade—from a totally different perspective.

NAILED!

A TRUE AMERICAN TRAGEDY.

NAILED!
THE IMPROBABLE RISE AND SPECTACULAR FALL OF LENNY DYKSTRA

Lenny “Nails” Dykstra was a hard-nosed, tobacco-chewing, clutch player and All-Star for the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies. He had a reckless, no-holds-barred attitude on the field and he was beloved because of it. He was a throwback to an earlier time. He came up big when it counted most and he would never quit on the field. Never.

After his playing days were over, Dykstra became a Southern California car wash magnate. And in 2008 he began making waves for success in a new arena: Wall Street. Dykstra was apparently invincible and it seemed to make sense. He would never quit. He would continue to reinvent himself and flourish no matter what. Le-nny! Le-nny!

LONG SHOT

Yankeemania.comLONG SHOT

Mike Piazza, the greatest hitting catcher in the history of baseball, is best known for his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1992-1998) and the New York Mets (1998-2005). LONG SHOT (Simon & Schuster; February 12, 2013; $27.00) is Piazza’s candid, surprising, and inspiring autobiography, from his inauspicious draft selection tothe achievements that earned him 58% of the vote for the Hall of Fame on his first appearance on the ballot. Full of behind-scenes-stories, LONG SHOT provides invaluable insight on the most controversial era in Major League Baseball. Piazza addresses many of the controversies that dogged his career, including his dramatic confrontation with Roger Clemens at the 2000 World Series, rumors of being gay, and the steroid controversy that hovered over the sport during his time. He describes the thrill of his game-winning home run on September 21, 2001, the first sporting event in New York after the 9/11 tragedy, and adjusting to life after baseball.

Who Mike Piazza is:

* The long shot: Mike Piazza was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 62nd round of the 1988 baseball draft as a “courtesy pick.” The Dodgers never expected him to play for them—or anyone else. Piazza had other ideas. Through determination and hard work, he became the National League rookie of the year in 1993.

* The record holder: Mike Piazza is the greatest hitting catcher in the history of baseball. He has a lifetime batting average of .308 and hit 427 career home runs, 396 of them as a catcher, the major-league record for that position. He was a 12-time All-Star selection.

AVOIDING THE EPIDEMIC OF SERIOUS INJURY IN YOUTH SPORTS.

ANY GIVEN MONDAY
SPORTS INJURIES AND HOW TO PREVENT THEM,
FOR ATHLETES, PARENTS, AND COACHES—
BASED ON MY LIFE IN SPORTS MEDICINE

BY Dr. James R. Andrews with Don Yaeger

Serious injury in youth sports is an epidemic in American society.

Approximately forty-five million children and adolescents are involved in organized athletics in the United States. In 2007, there were 920,000 players under the age of eighteen treated in emergency rooms. Over the last dozen years, there has been a five- to seven-fold increase in serious injuries in youth sports. Some of these injuries can be career ending or even life limiting, causing potentially irreversible damage. A career in sport—albeit an amateur one—over far too soon. A majority of these injuries are preventable.

To help alter our current trajectory in youth sports, the preeminent and pioneering orthopaedic surgeon of the sports world, Dr. James Andrews, presents “ANY GIVEN MONDAY: Sports Injuries and How to Prevent Them, for Athletes, Parents, and Coaches—Based on My Life in Sports Medicine”, with Don Yaeger (Scribner, January 8, 2013), an absolute essential resource for parents, grandparents, coaches, trainers and athletes.

“Young athletes are one of our most important resources, and in Any Given Monday
Dr. Andrews provides them with the caution, wisdom, and inspiration they need
to succeed in sports and in life.”
—Brett Favre

“Dr. Andrews has long been recognized as a preeminent leader in sports medicine….
This book belongs in the library of every parent and coach in the country.”
—Bo Jackson

ANY GIVEN MONDAY refers to the major consultation day at Dr. Andrews’ clinic, when many of America’s premier athletes come to him for an examination of any injuries from their weekend matchups. Brett Favre, Bo Jackson, Roger Clemens, Albert Pujols, Charles Barkley, Jack Nicklaus, Troy Aikman, Drew Brees, Emmitt Smith, Matthew Stafford, and both Manning brothers are but a few of the sports icons that Dr. Andrews has treated over the years. After nearly forty years of practicing sports medicine at the highest levels, Dr. Andrews is at the pinnacle of his profession. Given the source, ANY GIVEN MONDAY will be an automatic and authoritative platform from which to reach parents, grandparents, coaches, and children with vital information.
